ANGLING - THE CLUB WAY (A POEM BY OUR TALENTED WRITER/FISHERWOMAN JAN STRINGER)

I am new to this sport,
It's a whole new gig.
I sit and contemplate, what type of rig?

What am I fishing for:
Bream, tommies or gar?
Oh deary me - my bait's in the car!

I must have it all now,
I've been back there twice.
Oh deary me - I've forgotten the ice!

My language is bad,
Must keep it toned down.
It's supposed to be fun - so what's with my frown?

Finally a line in,
It's out in the water.
My phone starts to ring - it may be my daughter.

So I answer, of course
And miss my first bite.
Oh please try again fish - I'm up for the fight!

The sun's coming up,
They tell me that's when
You fish will be hungry - or maybe at ten.

It's the top of the tide,
They should come on the bite,
Or maybe not - cos my line is a sight!

It's on the far bank
Caught up in a tree.
I cast it too far - oh deary me!

I pull and I tug,
It's not giving way.
I get out a knife - cut it off in dismay.

Back to my tackle box
To make a new rig.
Don't get upset Jan - their fish aren't that big!

Just keep on trying,
You must persevere.
You will win a comp one day - but it may be next year!

STANSBURY SUCCESS MAY 2016

Once again the club had the most amazing time at Stansbury. It was the day of the storm on Monday 9 May when we met in howling gale force winds and pouring rain. A king tide was predicted and so it was decided to cancel our competition on this day. Nevertheless, it was with stout heart and sturdy mind that some ventured forth and were rewarded with big catches. With water lapping the deck of the jetty, those fishing there had big catches of tommies. Others fished from the grassy banks of the beach with water completely covering the sand and caught many a mullet. 






On Tuesday 10 May, the weather had calmed and so the competition was held. Again, we were not disappointed and proudly showed off our catches at weigh in. Fish caught included tommies, mullet and even king george whiting. 

We all went home happy with our catches
including Queen Elizabeth with her 33 mullet.

FISHING AT GOOLWA FEBRUARY 2016

It was breezy and cool but the women of the club turned up armed with high hopes, tackle, sticky sweet bait and berley plus a few other tricks of the trade for catching carp to help clear the waters of the lake at Goolwa and Hindmarsh Island. The day met with some success including carp caught by each of two new ladies who had not had such fun for a long time. I think they might now be 'hooked' as new members!

REPORT ON LADIES FISHING CLUB FOR THE YEAR JULY 2011 TO JUNE 2012

Once again the Club has had a great fishing year. Our monthly meetings have been well supported with an average attendance of 11 out of 18 members present - a really good indication of a healthy and active club!

The change to our new system of weighing fish as well as being awarded points for the number of fish caught and attendance at competitions has now been in place for a year. It's working well, though we can see a need for minor adjustment after which the rules for moving from B Grade to A Grade will be more achievable.

Our fishing experience exposes us to all kinds of conditions in weather and wildlife. Who will ever forget witnessing the rare viewing of a 12 metre southern right whale off the jetty at Rapid Bay as it made its way from the top of the jetty, down between the old and new jetty, under the new jetty and back out into the bay - a magical moment if ever there was one! Weather conditions offer much to be admired as well - rainbows, sunsets, reflections and of course the wind, rain and storms! Fish catches have varied hugely, but our experience at Stansbury continues to make it our favourite spot. Here we all go home with a good feed! The mullet come in by the hundreds! Not only the fishing, but the social interaction during the two days at Stansbury are very enjoyable and highly valued.

Edithburgh jetty as a final venue for 2011/2012 proved to be an experience never to be forgotten! Tommies by the dozen were there for the catching! Even King George Whiting!

The Club thrives on its interaction both socially and competitively. Formed in 1978, an amazing 34 years ago, it continues to be proud of its organisation, not the least of which is this year, having achieved an update of its Constitution and Rules. Its on this very basis, that the club will continue to be so successful. Let's face it ... women really are the best fisherpeople!

Presentation Lunch at the Feathers Hotel

On Tuesday 6 July 2010 our members, their partners and friends gathered for lunch and a celebration of another year of fishing together. It was cold outside, but the atmosphere inside was both congenial and convivial with much chat and laughter coming from the tables. The delights of the carvery with a hearty winter soup for starters followed by a tasty roast and the most delicious assortment of desserts were enjoyed by all. It was a great opportunity to get to know each other a little bit more and to congratulate those who were most successful in their catches during the year.

Fishing trip to Stansbury

It was Monday 19 April at 1.30 pm when the ladies of the club met on the Stansbury foreshore full of optimism and looking forward to a big catch. The weather was perfect but from all reports the mullet hadn't yet reached Stansbury .... but this was a new day and this was a group of very talented fisherwomen .... Lines went in at 1.45 and the fishing comp began. The tide turned and for the first three hours, for most of us, the only activity was moving our gear back from the water's edge. We were teased with a few bights and a few fish were caught but our patience was put to the test as we waited. Finally we were rewarded with a flurry of activity - the first mullet was caught and then it was on. The last hour was hugely successful and everyone caught fish. It was a great day and we weren't disappointed.

Dinner at the Dalrymple after an afternoon of fishing was most enjoyable!

Tuesday 20 April at 1.30 pm we met again and proceeded to take up our positions on the beach. Word had got out that a bunch of women fishers were catching many mullet so the locals and holidaymakers from the caravan park were soon to join us. They were most impressed with our skills and wanted to know our secrets. It was another day of patiently waiting till the last hour when again the mullet came on in full swing. The beach at Stansbury is so beautiful and this made the wait all the more enjoyable. Clouds were in spectacular formation and the sunset to the west of us was almost outshined by the most fantastic rainbow to the east of us. With the odd dolphin swimming by and a sting ray or skate gliding past it was never dull ... the hot chips helped to pass the time as well! Again there were some very good catches for the day. Now the locals can have their beach back again as we all headed home that night or the following day. It was great fun!

The ladies meet to synchronise watches, learn the boundaries for fishing, understand the times for lines out and set off in friendly competitive form!

2009 TRADING TABLE

On Friday 30 October the Club held its major fundraiser for the year which was a trading table set up next to the Uniting Church on Jetty Road, Glenelg. Once again members of the Club had miraculously gathered a huge range of items for sale including home baking, crafts, bric-a-brac, books, plants, cassettes, cds, children's toys and much more. Our tables were filled to capacity and many people were attracted to the array of goods. Our customers not only appreciated and enjoyed the quality of the items for sale but went away happy with the bargains they had made. Considering all items were sold for less than $10, the Club can be very proud to have raised a substantial sum of money, far in excess of our Treasurer's goal! The funds raised by our members will benefit the ladies of the Club with subsidies toward the cost of travel to long distance venues for fishing competitions and some social functions. Congratulations to all for a very successful morning's work and thank you also to our helpers Rob and Bobbie.

ABOUT US

None of the women in the club are experts, but when we pool our ideas, our knowledge is extensive. We successfully catch many varieties of fish such as gar, mullet, bream, whiting, tommy ruffs and others. We do not try to catch fish beyond our strength, but some of us are capable of landing fish to boast about. Some of us have fished for a short time and others have many years' experience, but for all of us, fishing adds to the enjoyment of life. We have monthly meetings and monthly fishing visits to areas along the south coast, upper and lower Yorke Peninsula, local jetties, beaches and freshwater areas.
